My first BBT chart looked like a seismograph during an earthquake. Random spikes, weird dips, temperatures that made no sense. After six months of consistent tracking, I can now look at a chart and read it like a story. Here's what I've learned about the patterns that actually matter.

The Classic Biphasic Pattern

This is the "normal" chart you see in fertility books. Low temperatures before ovulation (my baseline is around 97.2°F), a sharp rise of 0.3-0.5°F after ovulation, and sustained high temperatures for 12-14 days until your period arrives. My chart looks like this about 60% of the time. It's clean, it's obvious, and it's satisfying.

The key is the "sustained" part. One high temperature doesn't mean ovulation. You need at least three temperatures above your coverline to confirm. My coverline is calculated by taking the highest of the last six low temperatures and adding 0.1°F. The Fallback Rise

This one freaked me out the first time I saw it. Temperature spikes after ovulation, then drops for one day below the coverline, then rises again and stays high. I thought something was wrong. I Googled "broken BBT chart" and "failed ovulation" and panicked for 24 hours.

Turns out, the fallback rise is completely normal. It happens in about 20-30% of cycles. The theory is that estrogen briefly surges after ovulation, causing a temporary temperature dip before progesterone fully takes over. My March cycle had this pattern. I ovulated on day 16, temp rose on day 17, dipped on day 18, and stayed elevated for 13 days. Perfectly healthy cycle. I just didn't know what I was looking at.

The Triphasic Pattern

A triphasic chart shows three distinct temperature levels: low pre-ovulation, high post-ovulation, and a second mini-rise about a week later. This is the one everyone gets excited about because it's sometimes associated with pregnancy. I got a triphasic pattern in April. I was not pregnant that cycle.

Here's the truth: triphasic patterns happen in both pregnant and non-pregnant cycles. The second rise is caused by a secondary progesterone surge, which can happen whether or not implantation occurred. I know this because I've now had two triphasic charts — one pregnant cycle (eventually miscarried at 6 weeks) and one non-pregnant cycle. The pattern alone means nothing without a positive test.

The Implantation Dip

This is a one-day temperature drop 7-10 days after ovulation, followed by a rise back to luteal levels. It's called an "implantation dip" because some pregnant charts show it, but — surprise — it also happens in non-pregnant cycles. I've seen it twice. Neither time was I pregnant.

The dip is caused by a brief estrogen surge, not implantation specifically. Calling it an "implantation dip" is misleading and I wish fertility communities would stop doing it. It's just a dip. It might mean implantation, it might mean nothing.

What Actually Matters

After 18 months of tracking, I've learned that individual data points are meaningless. One high temp, one low temp, one weird dip — none of it tells you anything. What matters is the overall pattern across your entire cycle. Is there a clear shift? Does the high phase last at least 10 days? Is the pattern consistent across multiple cycles?
